The Senior Resident Magistrate court in Mulanje has sentenced a 34-year-old man, Michael Kadewere to 10 years IHL for allegedly raping an 86-year-old woman.
Police prosecutor, Sub Inspector Kelvin Lichapa told the court that on March 28 2022 Kadewere went to the victim's house where he approached and convinced her to follow him to a nearby shop claiming he wanted to buy some "chingambwe" for her. Whilst on the way, Kadewere dragged the old woman into a nearby bush where he raped her before she was rescued by some villagers after hearing her shout for help.
Appearing in court before Magistrate Shahida Haneef Bakili, Kadewere pleaded not guilty to the charge prompting the state to parade three witnesses who testified against him.
In mitigation, the convict asked for court's leniency, saying he has a child that looks up to him and that if sent to prison the child will suffer.
But making submissions, Sub Inspector Lichapa asked for a stiff punishment saying the convict portrayed a very bad behaviour by raping a woman who is old enough to be his mother.
Magistrate Bakili conquered with the state and later sentenced Kadewere to 10 years imprisonment with hard labour.
The convict hails from Mwasa Village, in the area of Traditional Authority Njema in Mulanje District.
