Silver Strikers Football Club has booked a place in the 2024 Airtel Top 8 finals after edging out Mighty Mukuru Wanderers 1-0 in a mesmerizing semifinal match at Bingu National Stadium on Saturday evening.

A single goal from forward Binwell Katinji in the eighth minute was all it took to secure the victory for the Bankers, setting up a potential showdown against either FCB Nyasa Big Bullets or Kamuzu Barracks, who will clash in the second semifinal on Sunday afternoon at the same venue.

Katinji’s decisive strike came from a well-timed run by Chisinsi Maonga down the right flank, taking advantage of a defensive mix-up between Wanderers’ Lawrence Chaziya and Peter Cholopi. Maonga’s pinpoint pass found Katinji in prime position to slot home with his first touch, leaving Wanderers goalkeeper Richard Chipuwa with no chance.

The Bankers dominated possession in the first half, creating a series of scoring opportunities and winning six corners to Wanderers’ three.

Katinji and Maonga were relentless in challenging the Wanderers’ defense, with Silver Strikers pressing high and dictating the pace.

Despite their dominance, the Bankers couldn’t convert additional chances, while Wanderers struggled to find their rhythm.

The Nomads’ closest attempt came in the 18th minute when Isaac Kaliati’s shot from outside the box narrowly missed the top corner.

In the second half, Silver Strikers faced added adversity when Nickson Mwase received a second yellow card in the 76th minute, reducing them to ten men.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Silver’s defense remained solid, and Wanderers, though persistent, could not break through.

George Chikooka was instrumental in goal for Silver, making crucial saves, including a close-range stop from Sama Thierry in the 64th minute.

At the final whistle, Silver Strikers’ coach Peter Mponda praised his team’s resilience and commitment, recognizing the match as a hard-fought win.

“Very happy with the fighting spirit, very happy with the result. But in terms of playing, we didn’t play well. We only played the first thirty minutes of the first half. It was very unfortunate that we didn’t utilize the several chances we created, but I am happy with the fighting spirit of the boys,” said Mponda.

Reflecting on the impact of Mwase’s red card, Mponda explained his strategic shift for the team.

“We needed to change, and we did. I told them to be strong defensively and to look for counter-attacks. We managed to get about two or three counters, but unfortunately, we didn’t convert them,” added Mponda.

On the opposite side, Wanderers’ head coach Meck Mwase expressed disappointment with the early goal, which he felt disrupted their game plan.

“We conceded very early, which has been an issue we’ve been facing. The boys tried their best, but I think we just didn’t have chances to score,” he said.

Commenting on the difficulty his team faced after Silver’s red card, Mwase added, “It’s sometimes very difficult when the opposing team is down a player—they often work even harder. Even with our dominance, we couldn’t capitalize to score. We still have two cups to pursue, and we’ll encourage our players to keep working hard.”

Silver Strikers now await the outcome of Sunday’s second semifinal between FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Kamuzu Barracks, with the winner set to meet the Bankers in the Airtel Top 8 final.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets clinch historic third consecutive Airtel Top 8 title

Returning to Bingu Stadium on July 20, 2025, Bullets faced Silver Strikers for the third time in an Airtel final. Historically, Bullets have never lost to Silver Strikers in this final fixture, maintaining their unbeaten record.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets continued to rewrite Malawi football history by securing their third straight Airtel Top 8 championship and cementing their dominance in the competition.

The Reds triumphed 4-3 on penalties over Silver Strikers following a 1-1 draw in regulation time at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Bullets have set remarkable records in the Airtel Top 8 as they are the only team to reach five consecutive finals, from 2021 to 2025, and have appeared in six finals overall (2018, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025).

Moreover, they are the sole club to have lifted the prestigious trophy four times, showcasing consistent excellence in Malawi’s top knockout competition.

Despite their dominance, Bullets did not participate in the 2019 Airtel Top 8 after being banned due to violent conduct in the 2018 final against Blue Eagles, which they lost 1-0 via a Stuart Mbunge penalty.

The match itself was a tense affair, Maxwell Gasten Phodo gave Bullets an early second-half lead in the 50th minute by heading in a corner from substitute Peter Banda.

Silver Strikers responded through Stein Devie’s powerful header in the 65th minute off an assist from Zebron Kalima, leveling the score and forcing the match into penalties.

The penalty shootout was marked by high drama, Silver Strikers had Zebron Kalima, Maxwell Paipi, and Chinsinsi Maonga successfully convert their spot-kicks, but missed chances from Chisomo Mpachika and Levison Maganizo, the latter having his effort saved by Bullets’ goalkeeper Innocent Nyasulu.

For Bullets, Hassan Kajoke missed his penalty by sending it off target, but Blessings Mpokera, Andrew Jovinala, Dominic Musonda and Ephraim Kondowe scored with composure to seal a 4-3 shootout victory, handing Bullets the 2025 Airtel Top 8 crown.

After the match, Silver Strikers’ coach Peter Mgangira praised Bullets as a strong and well-managed team.

“I am happy with the play, but disappointed with the results. Bullets is a good side managed by a good coach, congratulations to Bullets,” he said.

His counterpart, Bullets coach Peter Mponda expressed immense pride in his team’s effort and resilience.

“Our boys gave their best. We relaxed a little, which allowed Silver to come back strong, but I am impressed—we won,” said Mponda.

This final echoed memories of their 2021 meeting when Silver Strikers’ Stain Davie also scored but Maganizo missed his penalty, allowing Bullets to claim the title.

Last year’s final at the same venue also saw Bullets beat Silver Strikers 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ernest Petro.

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets have advanced to the final of the Airtel Top 8 after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Karonga United in the first semifinal played on Saturday evening at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The match started on a cautious note but gradually built into a thriller.

In the 16th minute, Karonga United had a golden opportunity to take the lead. Allen Chihana found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Richard Chimbamba after a brilliant pass from Patrick Phiri but failed to convert, with the Bullets shot-stopper reacting quickly to deny him. It was a chance Karonga United will live to remember.

Ten minutes later, Bullets responded. In the 26th minute, winger Chikumbutso Salima opened the scoring after tapping in a low Peter Banda free kick, sending the champions ahead.

Just moments later, in the 28th minute, Henry Chiwaya nearly extended the lead for Bullets but his weak shot was comfortably collected by goalkeeper Clever Mwale.

The game opened up after that. Karonga pressed for an equalizer and nearly got it in the 30th minute when Patrick Phiri combined well with Saulos Moyo and went one-on-one with Chimbamba, only for the keeper to deny him from close range.

Six minutes later, Casto Kayuni headed over the bar from a Pilirani Thulu cross in yet another missed opportunity for Karonga.

In the 40th minute, Karonga made their first substitution, bringing in Robert Luhanga for the injured Saulos Moyo. Two minutes later, Bullets responded with a double change, replacing Blessings Joseph and Peter Banda with Chawanangwa Gumbo and Yamikani Mologeni respectively.

Karonga came out of the break with renewed intent, launching two early attempts in the second half that were well dealt with by the Bullets defense.

Their efforts paid off in the 52nd minute. From a free kick taken from the same spot where Bullets scored their opener, Patrick Phiri turned provider once again, delivering a perfect ball that was converted by Robert Luhanga to level the score. Moments later, Phiri received the game’s first yellow card for unsporting behavior.

In the 57th minute, Chiwaya was booked for simulation after diving in the box in an attempt to win a penalty. Two minutes later, Luhanga missed a big chance to put Karonga in front, heading over the bar after Chimbamba failed to deal with a high ball.

Bullets reclaimed their lead in the 64th minute when substitute Chawanangwa Gumbo delivered a pinpoint low cross into the box, and Hassan Kajoke—completely unmarked on the right—slotted home with composure to make it 2-1.

Bullets made a double substitution in the 72nd minute, bringing on Wongani Lungu and Edward Thengo for Henry Chiwaya and Frank Willard. Five minutes later, Salima went down in the box under a challenge, but referee Easter Zimba waved away appeals for a penalty from the Bullets bench.

Karonga tried to find another equalizer by introducing Kennedy Magulabge and Alick Austin in the 79th minute for Allen Chihana and Casto Kayuni, followed by the 85th-minute substitution of Nuswe Walilino for Cloude Mkoko.

Bullets also made late adjustments, taking off Kajoke in the 89th minute for Ernest Petro to manage the game to the final whistle.

Speaking after the match, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets head coach Peter Mponda praised his players for converting their chances but admitted Karonga had the better opportunities.

“In terms of possession and the way we played, I feel we were better, though Karonga had more open chances. If they had taken them, it could have been a different result,” Mponda said.

“We were shaky at the back and allowed Karonga too much room. But I must give credit to Coach Oscar—he’s doing a great job under tough circumstances. Up front, we didn’t create many chances, but we were efficient with what we had.”

Mponda also hailed the return of winger Peter Banda, who made his first appearance after over a year out with injury.

Peter Banda provided an assist on his return from a long injury

“He gave us what we wanted and expected. It’s not the same injury and he looked sharp out there. I don’t think it was too early for him to play,” he added.

Karonga United coach Oscar Kaunda, though disappointed, was proud of his youthful team.

“It was a good game. First of all, congratulations to Bullets. They’ve done well and we wish them all the best in the final. I’m proud of my boys. They’re young and learning. There were some mistakes today, but that’s part of the game. We’ll go back, train, and come back stronger,” said Kaunda.

He also acknowledged the club’s current rebuilding phase after losing key players.

“We sold our stars like Blessings Mwalilino and Nanisoni Mbewe to Mighty Wanderers and haven’t replaced them. That’s the challenge we’re facing now. But we’ll keep pushing our young players to improve.”

FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will now await the winner of Sunday’s second semifinal between Civo Service United and Silver Strikers, also to be played at Bingu National Stadium, to determine their opponent in the Airtel Top 8 final.

“Karonga United is improving with each and every game. It was a very difficult match, but we had an advantage because we were a better side. We planned to score not less than two goals, and we are happy to have progressed to the competition’s next round,” said Chimkwita.

On the other hand, Mighty Wanderers Head Coach Bob Mpinganjira accepted the defeat with dignity.

“We gave it all, but we were not lucky to get the much-needed goals. It was a very good game. Karonga utilised their chances and scored the goals,” Mpinganjira remarked.
