The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) has issued a warning about Tropical Storm Faida, which is developing in the Indian Ocean and could bring heavy rains and potential flooding to Malawi.

According to a statement released on Monday, the storm, currently 150 km northeast of Madagascar, has a central pressure of 998 hPa and is moving northwest at 19 km/h. While it is not yet affecting Malawi, its projected movement into the Mozambique Channel raises concerns.

“At its current position, Storm Faida does not pose an immediate threat to Malawi. However, its projected track indicates possible movement closer to our region. The DCCMS will continue monitoring and updating the nation accordingly,” the statement reads.

While the storm remains offshore, DCCMS has warned the citizenry of intensified rainfall due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which could result in flash floods, particularly in lakeshore districts.

“Rainfall is expected to be enhanced in many parts of the country due to ITCZ influence. As a result, the threat of flash floods remains high, especially in flood-prone areas,” the department cautioned.

In previous years, similar weather patterns have led to severe flooding, displacing thousands and damaging infrastructure. Communities in Mangochi, Salima, Karonga, and Nsanje are among those most vulnerable.

The DCCMS has advised Malawians to stay informed and take necessary precautions.

“We urge people living in low-lying areas to stay vigilant and follow safety measures, including identifying safe evacuation points. Fishermen and travelers should also take extra caution as weather conditions may deteriorate,” reads the statement.
