Salima Police Spokesperson, Sub-Inspector Rabecca Ndiwate, confirmed to Malawi News Agency (MANA) on Monday that the suspect, Ellen Yohane, was intercepted at Kaphatenga roadblock on September 30 as officers were conducting their normal operations.

She said: “In the process of conducting our duties, our officers stopped a truck, registration number LA 5727 that carried sugar and was coming from the direction of Nkhotakota heading to Salima.”

“In the course of searching, a large bag containing Cannabis was spotted, and the driver revealed that the suspect was the bearer of it. She was arrested after failing to produce permit regarding the illicit drug,” she said adding that the seized hemp will be sent to Chitedze Research Station for further tests.

The suspect will soon appear in court soon to answer charges of being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa without license contrary to Regulation 4(a) as read with Section 19(1) of Dangerous Drug Act.

Yohane hails from Chinkhuti Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Nthondo in Ntcheu district.
