Three arrested for illegal possession of chamba

Police at Mponela in Dowa District on Tuesday arrested three men for being found in possession of Cannabis Sativa, popularly known as chamba, without a license.

Public Relations Officer for Mponela Police Station, Sergeant Macpatson Msadala has identified the three as Precious Elisa, 29; Foster Wilimoti, 24, and 36-year-old Charles Kanyenga who were apprehended at Mlengwe Trading Centre.

“Detectives from Mponela Police Station were on a vehicle patrol enroute to Kayembe and upon arrival at Mlengwe, along Mtiti-Nambuma earth road, they came across a minibus, Toyota Hiace registration number KA 6980, with three occupants.

“Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered thirty-six bricks of loose Cannabis Sativa wrapped in black plastic papers which led to the arrest,” said Msadala.

He said the three suspects will soon appear before the court to answer charges of illegal possession of the drug after analysis of the suspected substance at Chitedze Research Station.

Elisa hails from Masada Village in Traditional Authority (TA) Kalolo, Wilimoti hails from Mitundu Village in TA Chiseka both in Lilongwe district while Kanyenga hails from Mphepozinayi Village, TA Ganya in Ntcheu.
