The introduction of a reduced electricity tariff for farmers aims to provide essential support to the agricultural industry.

Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola, announced this initiative during a sensitization meeting with district officers in Lilongwe, emphasizing its alignment with the government’s vision of transforming Malawi into a productive and exporting nation.

“Malawi’s economy is agro-based. So, in order for our economy to flourish, we need to support the agriculture sector,” said Matola.

Chifundo Kameko, the Senior Marketing and Business Development Officer at the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom), outlined the immediate implementation of the initiative with approximately 100 customers.

The focus will be on smallholder farmers within the maximum demand customer base, consuming no less than 50 Kilovolt-amps.

This targeted approach aims to benefit those farmers who play a crucial role in the agricultural landscape of Malawi.
