The news was announced at the end of the virtual intergovernmental negotiations, which took place from November 30 to December 1, 2023, in Lilongwe.

At the end of the negotiations, the Germany Ambassador to Malawi, Ute Konig, expressed her government’s commitment to continue supporting Malawi in various sectors of the economy and cushioning Malawians from the effects of devaluation.

“We reconfirm our support of Malawi 2063 and its objective of becoming an inclusively wealthy and self-reliant nation,” Konig said.

Malawi’s Minister of Finance Simplex Chithyola Banda described the financial support as timely because the country has been facing a lot of challenges.

“This financial support will among others help us in public finance management and implementation of the Social Cash Transfer Programme,” said Chithyola-Banda.

The last intergovernmental negotiations between Malawi and Germany were held in 2021.

Meanwhile, governance experts are calling Malawians to support the government ‘s economic reforms agenda although they are painful in nature.
