In the heart of Lilongwe, Masumba Nthumbwi Village is experiencing a renaissance, a vibrant transformation brought about by the Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project (SSRLP).
As the residents of this community, under the watchful eye of Traditional Authority Masumbankhunda, stride with newfound confidence, their steps echo the success and fulfilment emanating from the impactful initiatives that have turned their once barren landscape into a lush, green haven.
The SSRLP, a visionary $490 million, 7-year project initiated in 2020, is a collaboration between the Malawi Social Protection Multi Donor Trust and key funders, including the World Bank, USAID, Iceland, Ireland, UK-FCDO, EU, and Norway.
Operating in 28 local authorities across Malawi, the project comprises two core components: the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme (CS-EPWP) and Social Cash Transfer (SCTP).
The project’s aim is to uplift communities by promoting environmental conservation and fostering resilient livelihoods.
Phalazi Catchment Area, nestled within Lilongwe district, stands as a testament to the positive impact of the SSRLP.
Malijeni Mackson, the chairperson of this community, enthusiastically shared how the afforestation initiatives have significantly contributed to forest conservation in the area. Since 2020, the community has successfully raised three forests through innovative tree regeneration and seedling planting programs.
Mackson elaborated on the multifaceted approach employed by the community. Beyond tree planting, the establishment of tree seedling nurseries has become a pivotal aspect of their conservation efforts.
The community is actively engaged in tree regeneration exercises, a testament to their commitment to a sustainable and green future.
The impact is not just environmental but also addresses practical challenges, such as mitigating the damage caused by strong winds to the community’s housing structures.
Unity within the community has been a driving force in the success of these initiatives. Mackson emphasized the implementation of stringent bylaws designed to counter deforestation.
Those found violating these regulations face consequences, appearing before chiefs and being fined two goats. This proactive approach has proven effective in preserving the newly established forests, showcasing the community’s determination to sustain the benefits beyond the initial project period.
At 86 years old, Folodiya Jeputala from Kauma village is a living testament to the transformative power of the SSRLP.
She expressed her gratitude for the project, highlighting her ability to purchase two goats and materials for irrigation farming.
Jeputala’s story resonates with others in the community who have not only improved their immediate livelihoods but are also setting ambitious future goals, including the construction of houses with iron sheets.
In Kundwe Kawala Catchment Area, the SSRLP has empowered farmers like Linda Chadza to tackle the challenges of running water washing away their crop fields.
Through the construction of check dams and swales, the community has successfully mitigated the impact of erosion, providing a sense of security for their agricultural activities. Chadza applauded the introduction of climate-smart agriculture, enabling the cultivation of diverse crops such as groundnuts.
Lilongwe District Council Irrigation Agronomist Tharson Ngoma commended the SSRLP’s progress in 22 catchment areas, emphasizing improvements in beneficiary participation, community contributions to climate-smart activities, and an increase in agricultural land.
Plans are underway to expand the programme to meet the target of 24,628 beneficiaries, with the current count standing at 22,824.
Ngoma also highlighted a fascinating ripple effect—the adoption of program technologies and practices by non-beneficiary community members in their respective gardens. This unintended yet positive consequence showcases the program’s broader influence on sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation beyond its primary beneficiaries.
As Lilongwe thrives amidst this green revolution, the SSRLP stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to sustainable development. Implemented through the National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) and Local Government Authorities, the SSRLP aims to nurture resilient communities capable of withstanding the challenges of the future.
As the project journeys towards its conclusion in 2027, Lilongwe’s metamorphosis serves as an inspiring example of how social support, coupled with visionary initiatives, can turn communities green and sustainable.
