The community’s chairperson Zhou Shanjian made the pledge at the Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe when he presented a donation of K75 million to the Malawi Government.

The donation, which was in the form of K45 million worth of relief items and K30 million cash, aims to assist the Malawi Government to better respond to the needs of survivors of Tropical Cyclone Freddy in some districts in the Southern Region.

While commending President Chakwera and his government for the swift response to the disaster, Shanjian observed that the damage the storm caused was huge and that the government alone cannot address the challenges emanating from it.

President Chakwera commended the Chinese Community in Lilongwe, describing the donation as timely.

The Malawi leader said the support of the Chinese Community in Lilongwe will go a long way in responding to the social and food requirements of people in evacuation camps.

“We are very grateful to your community for this donation. I wish to assure you that this donation will be used for its intended purpose,” said Chakwera.
