Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima on Thursday called for speedy rehabilitation of Muloza bridge which was partly swept away by floods.

Chilima made the call on Thursday when he visited the site where operations at the border have been affected.
The Vice President said after inspecting the bridge he felt recovery works cannot take a lot of time hence the need for the works to be done as soon as possible.
“Engage your counterparts in Mozambique and do temporary rehabilitation while waiting for full rehabilitation and do it as soon as possible.”
“People need to start crossing over that that bridge within two weeks for cross border trade and transportation of goods,” said Chilima.
Apart from damaging the bridge, Malawi Revenue Authority offices, Police offices and houses, water pumping station, shops and community houses among others were flooded.
While addressing survivors at Chitedze and Namulenga primary schools he continued to call on authorities to ensure that all affected households are reached with relief items without any maladministration.
District Commissioner for Mulanje, David Gondwe said they hope more people will be able to leave the camps so that leaners can continue using the structures.
He then thanked government for the commitment it has shown to the people of Mulanje which he said was evident by the frequent visits.
About 25,000 households have been affected where property and houses were damaged as a result of floods induced by Tropical Cyclone Freddy which hit most areas in the southern region of Malawi.
