Malawi Council for the Handicapped (MACOHA) has described Focus on Ability Short Film Festival initiative by Focus on Ability Society (FOAS) as crucial in achieving an inclusive society in Malawi.

In an interview, MACOHA Public Relations Officer, Harriet Kachimanga welcomed the initiative saying it has a tremendous impact on the society.
“These short films have given an exposure to people with disabilities in showing their abilities and also helps to take out stigma and discrimination which is a step in achieving a collective inclusive society in the country,” she said.
Kachimanga added that the films or documentaries also act as an inspiration to other physically challenged persons in income generating activities thereby leading to self-reliance.
She, therefore, urged the public to participate in the 2024 festival.
Smart Vinti, who emerged winner in the actor’s category of the 2023, Festival said the award has pushed him to take artistic business to another level.
He has, therefore, urged fellow persons with disabilities not to embrace themselves in their capabilities.
FOAS Executive Director, Macdonald Nyirenda, said submission of short films or documentaries that have stories showcasing capabilities and achievements of people with any form of disability across Malawi is open for the 8th festival.
The festival began in Malawi in 2017 with support from NOVA Employment, an Australian international film organisation, with an aim of raising awareness about abilities of people with disability through film.
Each year winners of receive prize money ranging from US$250 to US$5,000 as best film makers and best actors.
The prizes are an incentive to filmmakers and people with disability to motivate them in telling stories of capabilities of people with disability.
