Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Director of Distribution and Customer Services, Young Chewere has urged newly graduated ESCOM linespersons to distance themselves from corrupt practices saying they should put Malawians at heart in the course of their work.

Chewere said this on Friday during the graduation ceremony of 41 linespersons who graduated from Mpemba ESCOM Training Centre in Blantyre.
He said at the moment, ESCOM has got a deficiency of staff in terms of linesmen saying the new graduates will beef up service delivery by providing the much-needed services to the customers.
“I urge all of you to be professional and should be responsible in whatever you are doing. We do not want to have a bad reputation out there.
“The public should be aware that ESCOM personnel who comes to fix faults in the field are employed and paid by the company. If ESCOM employees demand money, they should report to our office,” he said.
In his remarks, a representative of the graduates, Japhet Chisambo hailed ESCOM management for equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills saying they are ready to serve Malawians.
“We have been equipped with what is needed to make a good powerlines man and that will be manifested when we go out there,” said Chisambo.
The 41 graduates from the southern region, are among 150 trainees who graduated in all regions after undergoing intensive 12-month powerlines training both theory and practical.
So far, other 38 have graduated in the central region while 34 have graduated in the Northern region and 37 from the Eastern Region.
