Acting Spokesperson for Karonga National Registration Bureau (NRB), Mufomubi Munthali says the Bureau will soon embark on national identity cards and community death registration outreach exercise in the district.

In an interview on Friday, Munthali said the excise will commence early August this year across all communities in the district.

The exercise is aimed at offering community members an opportunity to have all deaths registered and also register for national identity (ID) cards for those who are unregistered or lost the cards.

“We want to register all deaths that occurred in communities starting from 2017 to date including those who did not register for IDs but are eligible to have them,” Munthali said.

Munthali urged citizens to register and get IDs saying government’s social support interventions target those with national IDs.

“We assume that national ID, birth and death certificates will help people be easily traced and identified when government wants to offer social and economic support,” Munthali said.

In a separate interview, Paramount Chief Kyungu welcomed the decision saying it is very important for the people of Karonga, in particular, and Malawi as a whole to have national IDs and birth certificates.

He said the registration will, among other things, help government in planning and budgeting so that no citizen is left out from benefiting from different initiatives.

Kyungu, therefore, appealed to all traditional authorities and village heads in the district to support the exercise by sensitising communities about the importance of the exercise so that more citizens should register for the national IDs.
