Secretary for Basic and Secondary Education, Rachel Chimbwete Phiri has commended the Sight Savers International for its continued support to inclusive education.
Phiri made the remarks on Thursday in Lilongwe during an engagement meeting with the Sightsavers delegation.
She said the organisation has contributed tremendously to the education sector through various interventions including itinerant teaching programmes and continuous professional development for teachers across the country.
“Since 1960 when Montfort Teachers College of Special Needs Education was established the organisation has been helping with teacher training for special needs education in Malawi; this shows how important our partnership has been,” said Phiri.
She, however, pleaded for more support from the organization, noting that government alone cannot provide all necessary assistance to children with disabilities.
Deputy Chief Executive Officer for Sightsavers International, Dominic Haslam said they have been helping Malawi for many years, pledging continued support to inclusive education to make sure every child gets better education.

Haslam said they are many special needs children in the country and that they would ensure that those children get education just like everyone else.
“We are committed to working with the ministry in all our initiatives, our commitment is to ensure that every teacher is able to ensure that special needs learners in their schools get the support and the attention they deserve,” he said.
Sightsavers is an international non-governmental organisation which is focused on eliminating avoidable blindness and promoting the rights of people with disabilities.
Currently the organisation is working in almost seven districts some of which are Ntcheu, Mulanje, Zomba and Machinga.
