Karonga District Health Office (DHO) has purchased 400 mattresses worth K26 million as one means of improving patients’ comfortable accommodation at the district’s referral hospital.

Director of Health and Social Services for Karonga District Council, David Sibale said management decided to buy the mattresses to address beddings shortfall and replace those which are worn out.

“We ordered the mattresses from the Central Medical Stores Trust. So far, we have received 200 of them. The remaining consignment is expected to arrive anytime.

Apart from Karonga District Hospital the mattresses will be distributed to other health centres in the district like Chilumba and Hara among others,” he said.

Sibale advised health workers and patients to take care of the mattresses.

One of the residents of Karonga, Charity Mwafulirwa thanked Karonga DHO management for the development saying it would make life comfortable for patients.

“This is a welcome development and I feel relieved. We used to sleep on worn-out mattresses when admitted to this health facility. In some instances, we could sleep on the floor without mattresses,” he said.
