The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has called on its officers in the Central Region to demonstrate professionalism and confidence as they execute their duties.

MEC Regional Elections Manager for the Central Region, Essime Chisepeya, made the appeal on Friday at Mponela in Dowa District during a training session for Elections Management Device (EMD) operators and Constituency Civic and Voter Education Assistants (CCVEAs).

Chisepeya emphasized that CCVEAs and EMD operators serve as the face of MEC at the district and constituency levels, and must therefore be equipped with accurate and up-to-date information, especially as the nomination process for aspiring candidates is currently underway.

“These are our frontline staff, and it is essential that they are equipped with the necessary information about the nomination process,” said Chisepeya. “They must be able to respond to public queries with confidence and professionalism to maintain the integrity of the Commission.”

She noted that many officers had been struggling to respond to questions from aspiring candidates, but the training was designed to ensure a unified and well-informed message is conveyed to the public.

“Most of them were facing challenges in answering questions from aspiring candidates during the nomination period. We want them to speak with one voice on behalf of MEC,” Chisepeya added

Participants in the training expressed confidence following the session, saying it had prepared them to handle public inquiries more effectively.

“We used to face difficulties in responding to questions from community members and aspirants, especially during this nomination period. But now, that will be a thing of the past,” said Chimwemwe Banda, one of the CCVEAs.
