MERA suspends operations for 3 filling stations

Operations of three fuel service stations have been suspended by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) for selling fuel to customers in jerrycans and storing drums and jerrycans filled with petroleum products.

This follows a warning the energy regulator issued barely a week ago on 20th November, 2024.

“This decision has been arrived at to complement the efforts of fuel importers to restore the security of fuel supply in the shortest period. Any Fuel Service Station found, or reported to be selling Petrol in jerrycans will have its operating licence suspended immediately”. read the press release.

MERA banned buying of fuel in jerrycans

MERA says the lifting of the suspension will be subject to the Service Stations’ satisfactory implementation of measures to avoid reoccurrence of the malpractice.

“The Service Stations are MT MERU Santhe located in Kasungu, PUMA Gemini and TOTAL Ufulu located in Lilongwe.

“The Service Stations conduct undermined efforts to ensure equitable distribution and access of fuel to the public which is a serious violation of the Liquid Fuels and Gas Act” read the latest notice.
