Mwase fired as Flames coach, FAM appoints Marinica as head coach

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has fired Malawi 1 Football team head coach Meck Mwase and has been replaced by Marian Mario Marinica.

The decision to fire Mwase was made in Mangochi at Sunbird Nkopola Lodge on Saturday during FAM's Executive Committee First Quarterly Meeting.

According to a statement from the FA, the committee resolved to give Marinica a full mandate following the Flames' impressive performance at the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon.

"Flames Coach Meck Mwase has been relieved of his duties and FAM will engage the Malawi Government on redeploying the former Flames captain for the rest of his contract which expires in April next year. The Committee resolved to appoint Technical Director Mario Marinica as the Head Coach of the Malawi Men’s 1 Football.

"This was arrived at after the committee was impressed with the performance of the 1 Team at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroun in January under Marinica as Caretaker Head of Technical Panel and resolved to give him a full mandate," reads the statement.

The statement further reveals that Marinica will be allowed to choose his own backroom staff, which indicates that Mwase has been fired alongside his assistants Lovemore Fazili and Bob Mpinganjira.

In his response, Mwase said he has just learnt of the news through social media.

“I am yet to be informed of my fate. So, I can only comment when I get the official communication from my employers,” he said.

Meanwhile, Malawi FA has revealed it will engage the Malawi government to renew contracts of the under 20 Nation team technical panel headed by Decklerk Nsakakuona.

"The Committee also resolved to engage Malawi government on fast-tracking the renewal of contracts for Under 20 1 Team Coach Patrick Mabedi and Under 17 1 Team Coach Decklerk Nsakakuwona which expired in October last year," reads the statement.

The committee has meanwhile appointed FAM Technical Development Officer Benjamini Kumwenda as the new Technical Director to replace Marinica.

Mwase became the third local coach to qualify the team for Afcon finals after Henry Moyo in 1987 and Kinnah Phiri in 2010.
