Mzuzu police arrest seven for armed robbery

Police in Mzuzu are keeping in custody seven suspected armed robbers for allegedly being linked to a spate of robbery cases in the city.  

According to spokesperson for Northern Region Police, Maurice Chapola, all the seven suspects are ex-convicts who have recently been released from Chichiri Prison after serving sentences for various offences.

He said the suspects have been breaking into and robbing business places like shops and lodges and they also targeted homes that belong to foreign nationals.

“These suspected armed robbers have been stealing in different areas here in Mzuzu City for the past two months. When we received the news about the burglaries, we promised to investigate and arrest the thieves. Now we have managed to arrest them,” said Chapola.

The suspects

He urged Malawians not to hesitate to report cases of robbery as soon as they happen and provide tips of any suspects.  

The suspects are Chikondi Phiri, aged 45 from Mayaka Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Chikowi in Zomba, Bright Ben, aged 45 from Mphepo Village, T/A Wimbe in Kasungu, Wested Taulo, Aged 40 from Sabwilabwi Village, T/A Paundi from Manica Province in Mozambique.

Others are Masautso Kaipa, aged 32 from Mlandeni Village, T/A Mpamba in Chiradzulu, Sam Petro, aged 24, Amos Petulo, aged 28, both from Dongo Village, T/A Nsabwe and Yankho Wonderford, aged 18 from Chalingana Village T/A Chaangata, all in Thyolo.
