In a letter addressed to Minister of Homeland Security Jean Sendeza, Chairperson Gomezgani Nkhoma raised his concerns about the lack of progress in the exercise, claiming that funds initially estimated at K300 million were now up to K1.2 billion.

“Honorable, you told the nation that the exercise will cost K300 million but investigations show that you will spend MK1.2 billion. What necessitated the change. Why not communicating the change,” reads part of the letter.

Nkhoma: We need an explanation from the ministry

In an interview, Nkhoma told us that the caucus is not satisfied with the pace at which the exercise has taken.

“Part of the response from the minister said the exercise is still going on but described allegations that they received kickbacks as baseless. We are not satisfied with the way the exercise is going on because it is taking a snail’s pace,” says Nkhoma.

He also noted that he had been approached by unknown people trying to convince him to stay quiet on the matter due to ongoing cabinet reshuffles.

In response, Minister Jean Sendeza mentioned that they are still awaiting funding from Treasury for the exercise.

Last year, it was announced that all refugees living in areas and towns would be relocated following a complaint from local business owners.
