AU pledges to assist in rebuilding Malawi after Cyclone Freddy

The African Union (AU) – a 55-member states organization that represents all the countries on the African continent – has pledged to assist in rebuilding Malawi by lobbying member states to get involved in the recovery and reconstruction efforts.

The union has also expressed intent to help Malawi build resilience so that future natural disasters do not render grave damage to lives and property.

AU Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Ambassador Minata Samate Cessouma, made the pledge at Kamuzu Palace on Tuesday where the Malawi President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera hosted them.

The AU Commission is on a solidarity mission to appreciate and assess the level of damage caused by Cyclone Freddy for possible interventions.

President Chakwera expressed gratitude to AU for deliberate solidarity, which he said will factor into and transcend through his Operation Tigwirane Manja initiative.

President Chakwera initiated Operation Tigwirane Manja to mobilize local and international support towards victims of Cyclone Freddy and rebuilding of public infrastructure across the country.
