Chakwera meets Scottish First Minister in UK, pleads for support to cyclone survivors

PUBLISHED BY

Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Saturday held bilateral talks with newly-elected Scottish First Minister, Humza Yousaf, hours after he attended the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

The talks were among a series of bilateral meetings lined up during his stay in London.

Writing on his Facebook page, President Chakwera said he used the opportunity to appeal for support from Scotland to assist Malawi’s emergency international assistance to Cyclone Freddy victims, which is facing a deficit of over US$110 million and the reconstruction plan estimated to cost US$700 million.

“In the same vein I expressed our gratitude to Scotland’s pledge of £400,000 towards the relief of cyclone victims and for the £236,000 support towards Malawi’s cholera outbreak response earlier this year. We have agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries on issues of mutual interest like climate change, health and education,” said the Malawi leader.

He expressed confidence of sustained good bilateral ties owing to Yousaf’s relevant experience with Malawi having visited the country in 2014 while serving as Minister for External Affairs and International Development.
