President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera’s words that power outages will be a thing of the past is coming to pass following resumption of electricity generation at Kapichira Hydro Power Station.
The resumption comes 14 months after generation at the station came to a halt following the washing away of a section of the cofferdam by Tropical Cyclone Anna which affected the supply of electricity in the country.
Throughout the blackout days, President Chakwera remained positive and he assured Malawians that the blackouts will be sorted out before long.
True to President Chakwera’s words, Egenco has revealed that the station has started partial generation of electricity following the restoration of the power plant at the station.
Egenco Public Public Relation Officer Moses Gwaza told Times Publications that the company has so far switched on one newly installed Machine at the station.
He said: “Today, we switched on one machine which is 32.4 megawatts (mw) but we want to, at least, switch on the machines while we continue with construction [works].This should give us at least 97 megawatts.”
Kapichira Hydro Power Plant has a total generation of capacity of 129 megawatts.The addition of these megawatts will not only ease the blackouts that gripped the nation in recent times, it will also boost the industries and enhance trade in the long run.
