Government says it plans to use Zoa Fall for power generation where it will get 40 megawatts to add to the national grid.

Minister of Energy, Ibrahim Matola disclosed this on Thursday when he visited Zoa Falls in Traditional Authority Nsabwe, Thyolo which borders with Mozambique with senior officials from Egenco, Escom, and Power Market Limited.

“My visit was initiated by the two Presidents, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi and Filipe Nyusi of Mozambique that has been discussing a joint power generation project using Zoa Falls in the Ruo River.

“As the world is championing sustainable energy for all, we are looking at providing electricity to every Malawian come 2063. We cannot generate this electricity from one source hence we are diversifying to move away from only relying on Shire River,” he said.

He said he was impressed that the Falls can generate the power that the country needed desperately.

He said the use of Ruo River will be a joint venture hence the two governments are still putting up the paper works and modalities.

Senior Chief Nsabwe committed to assisting government in setting up the project in his area as it will benefit the country.
