Members of the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who support Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa have threatened to take legal action against the party if President Peter Mutharika fails to call for a convention by July this year.

In a press briefing in Mzuzu on Monday, DPP parliamentarians Werani Chilenga, Julius Chione Mwase, Mungasulwa Mwambande, and Raymond Nkhata, alongside other party members, expressed their views on the matter.

DPP member Kenneth Sanga stated that the party should hold the convention as stipulated in their constitution, and if the president does not call for it in consultation with the Secretary-General, they will seek guidance from the courts.

Sanga added, “It is important for the convention to take place because the mandate of all people who are holding positions now expires on July 2.”

Chilenga also expressed support for legal action if the party remains silent on the convention issue, stating, “come July, we are going to make sure that the party’s laws have been followed.”

However, DPP Regional Governor for the North Christopher Mzomera Ngwira described the members as disgruntled followers who have no power to speak for the party in the region.

He stated, “These people have shown rudeness. They are disgruntled and cannot be taken seriously.”

Mutharika’s spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba also criticized the members, stating that their actions are tantamount to indiscipline.

He added, “What they have done is total indiscipline and I cannot be responding to their tantrums.”

Political analyst George Phiri recently stated that the continued squabbles within the DPP are an indication that it is too late for the former ruling party to unite.
