Nankhumwa lauds Chakwera for swift action in support of cyclone survivors

Leader of Opposition Kondwani Nankhumwa on Wednesday dared his fellow Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers and other MPs in the opposition camp to commend President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera for demonstrating selfless leadership in responding to the adverse effects of Tropical Cyclone Freddy.

In his response to President Chakwera’s statement on the state of disaster and response to it, Nankhumwa said it is high time Malawians stopped politicizing the natural disaster and start giving credit where it was due.

“I wish to commend the President for being on the ground to appreciate the damage for himself,” said the Leader of Opposition.

But Nankhumwa emphasized the need for the President to consider instituting a special team of experts to manage funds that are being channelled towards victims of Cyclone Freddy.

According to Nankhumwa, this could prevent politicians from abusing the mobilized resources.

“We are grateful to note that assistance is trickling in from various development partners, but let not politicians be the ‘managers’ of this help as we all know there’s too much corruption in government,” said Nankhumwa.
