Residents challenged to observe hygiene as cholera cases drop in Blantyre

Blantyre City Council Director of Health and Social Services, Dr. Emmanuel Kanjunjunju says although Blantyre is slowly winning the battle against the Cholera outbreak, there is a need to continue observing hygiene and cleanliness in the city.

Kanjunjunju made the remarks on Thursday during a clean-up exercise organised by Limbe police in partnership with the business community and other stakeholders aimed at promoting mindset change among Limbe residents to desist from littering.

Kanjunjunju said BCC has put up interventions to promote hygiene in the city especially Limbe market where littering is rampant.

“We have already started putting facilities like litter bins which people can use to throw their wastes in all the streets, so that they should not have excuse of littering on the open spaces.

“A clean city is a healthy city, Blantyre had a very bad Cholera outbreak last year, and now it seems that we have improved in terms of the number of cases but if we do not take care, it can come back,” he said.

Limbe Police Officer in Charge, Gladson Chipumphula said it is the responsibility of all office bearers including police to rally behind the vision of making the city clean as championed by President Lazarus Chakwera when he launched Tithetse Cholera campaign on February 13, 2023 in Lilongwe.

He said cleanliness in place like Limbe, has the potential to attract investors and improve the socio-economic development in Blantyre and the country at large.

Among other stakeholders who took part in the cleaning exercise are the Asian Business Community, Minibus Owners Association of Malawi, Limbe Vendors Association, and Waste Management Association just to mention a few.
