Thyolo District Youth Officer, Blessings Major, has challenged young people in the district to venture into income-generating activities to effectively contribute to the socio-economic development of their communities.
Major made the remarks on Monday during a youth network leaders’ interface meeting aimed at addressing key issues affecting the welfare of young people in the district.
He described the youths as the leaders of today and tomorrow and that they must take an active role in various socio-economic activities to become self-reliant.
“Young people can engage in farming, business, and even make use of digital platforms to generate income,” he said, and added: “Today, we have discussed ways to empower ourselves economically and socially in our communities.”

The District Youth Officer encouraged youth network leaders to take the message back to their groups and to inspire their peers to start small-scale businesses as a means of economic empowerment.
Patrick Ntchuka, Youth Network Leader for Sub-Traditional Authority (Sub-T/A) Nguluwe, described the meeting as productive, saying it had equipped them with knowledge on how to make their networks more self-sustaining and economically active.
“As a leader, I will encourage fellow youths to engage in business and farming ventures to improve their livelihoods,” said Ntchuka.
The meeting was attended by various youth network leaders from across the district.
