The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) on Tuesday abruptly canceled its primary elections in the newly demarcated Karonga Lufilya Constituency after tensions escalated into violent clashes.
The decision to call off the elections came amid allegations of irregularities, including the introduction of unfamiliar delegates and unfulfilled promises by party officials.
According to some delegates interviewed at the scene, the election process was marred by favoritism, with officials allegedly backing a particular candidate.
They further claimed that individuals from Karonga Town Constituency were transported to the venue to take part in the election illegally.
“We were assured that transport would be provided, but we had to make our own way here. As we waited for an explanation, we saw vehicles bringing in delegates from Karonga Town Constituency to participate in the elections. That’s when we intervened and chased them away,” one delegate explained.
The disruption has sparked widespread anger among local leaders, including traditional chiefs, who accused MCP of deceit, citing previous broken promises during the ward by-elections.
“MCP deceived us during the recent ward by-elections, and now they are doing it again. We thought they had changed, but we were wrong. These elections will not take place here. If they insist, they can hold them in Karonga Town Constituency,” an enraged chief stated.
Amid the unrest, some delegates urged candidate Atusaye Nyondo to leave MCP and contest as an independent candidate.

“Nyondo is the people’s choice, but MCP is trying to sideline him by bringing in outside delegates. We urge him to abandon the party’s dirty politics and stand independently. We will support him, and he will win,” said Brian Mwakikunga.
Another delegate, Ellen Munthali, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing Nyondo’s contributions to local development.
“He can stand as an independent or even return to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). We followed MCP because of Nyondo, not because we support the party. If MCP doesn’t want him, he should go back to DPP. We prioritize development over party politics,” she stated.
When contacted, Karonga District MCP Chairperson Emmanuel Nkhoma confirmed the cancellation of the elections but requested more time to provide further details.
The primary elections were set to feature three candidates: Atusaye Nyondo, Abraham Mwakhwawa, and Dr. James Mwaisemba.
