AfDB’s Country Manager Macmillan Anyanwu noted these are very important issues to Malawi especially as it moves towards the 2025 General elections in September.

“It is important that even in our differences in political leanings we avoid being extreme in the way we view issues of governance so that is very relevant to Malawi. It also talks about human development. We do know that Malawi is facing a lot of challenges regarding human development in different aspects whether its education, health and things like that.

“I think the report has done a very good job in dissecting and analysing some of these things issues and given recommendations that would help in moving forward”

He advised that collaboration and working together is key across the political divide, among people who don’t necessarily share the same beliefs and ideologies.

Anyanwu further stated that globally multilateralism is crucial for countries especially at a time of increasing polarization to be able to solve and address issues affecting people.

The 2023/24 HDR assesses the dangerous gridlock resulting from uneven development progress, intensifying inequality, and escalating political polarization, that the world must urgently tackle.

Launched on 9th July, 2024 in Malawi by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Malawi government, it emphasizes how global interdependence is being reconfigured and proposes a path forward where multilateralism plays a pivotal role.
