AFORD accused of attacking MCP candidate in Kasungu
MCP has accused AFORD supporters of assaulting its candidate Chikondi Chisale and vandalizing property in Kasungu Central. The incident, condemned by MCP’s Dr. Jessie Kabwila, highlights rising tensions ahead of Malawi’s September 16 parliamentary by-elections.
Publicity Secretary for the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), Dr. Jessie Kabwila, has accused the Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) of being involved in violent acts in Kasungu.
Dr. Kabwira made the remarks on Tuesday at the MCP headquarters in Lilongwe, stating that AFORD supporters allegedly damaged a vehicle and assaulted Chikondi Chisale, an aspiring MCP candidate for Kasungu Central.

“We are appalled by this act, which demonstrates their desperation and inability to win the September 16 elections. Their resort to violence is a clear indication that they lack confidence in their own campaign,” she said.

Kabwira added that AFORD’s actions reflect weakness and a lack of faith in their electoral prospects. “When a party resorts to violence, it shows they have no ground to stand on. We urge AFORD to focus on campaigning peacefully and allow the people to decide,” she added.
She also called on MCP supporters to maintain peace throughout the campaign period.
Chikondi Chisale said he was robbed of MK17 million, a phone, and footballs intended for distribution to local boys. “This is a serious incident, and I urge the authorities to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” he said.
