APM gets unwavering support for DPP presidency

Forty four (44) members of Parliament belonging to the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have pledged their unwavering support for Peter Mutharika in the upcoming party’s elective conference scheduled for July next year.

During a meeting held at PAGE House in Mangochi on Wednesday, Victor Musowa, a representative of the MPs, formally endorsed Mutharika as their preferred candidate for the 2025 polls.

Musowa emphasized that the MPs are aligning themselves with Mutharika because he resonates with the desires of the grassroots population.

“We, as MPs, will wholeheartedly campaign for Mutharika and stand firmly behind him. Our support will not be extended to any other candidate as it is Mutharika who currently enjoys the trust and confidence of the Malawian people,” stated Musowa.

Musowa expressed hope that Mutharika will make an official announcement regarding his candidature in the near future, following the positive outcome of the meeting.

Chipiliro Mpinganjira, the Blantyre City Central legislator, echoed Musowa’s sentiments, emphasizing the need to rally behind Mutharika for the 2025 Tripartite Elections. Mpinganjira highlighted Mutharika’s ability to steer the country through economic hardships during his previous presidency, citing his successful efforts in stabilizing the economy amidst the aftermath of the Cashgate scandal.

Mutharika – poised to go unopposed at DPP Convention next year

Mpinganjira also stressed the importance of unity within the DPP, stating that Mutharika’s candidacy would bring about a sense of cohesion within the party, which is currently divided due to the presence of numerous aspirants.

“Mutharika has the track record to lead the country. When he was elected as President in 2014, the country was going through economic problems due to Cashgate as some donors had withdrawn their aid and funding. But under his leadership, he steadied the economy.

“So, with the current situation, we need him to fix the economy. Due to so many aspirants, DPP is divided. But with him the candidate, there will be unity in the party, ” said Mpinganjira.

Prominent MPs, such as Shadric Namalomba, Jappie Mhango, Dr. George Chaponda, and Mary Navicha, were among the attendees of the meeting.

The declaration of support from these MPs underscores the growing momentum behind Peter Mutharika as the favored candidate within the DPP for the 2025 elections.
