Biazina Orphanage in Machinjiri, Blantyre, has organised a fundraising luncheon scheduled for August 15 at Grand Masjid in Mangochi to raise money for the construction of a brick fence around its centre.

The orphanage says the initiative aims to create a safe environment for children under its care while ensuring they continue receiving essential support such as education, food, clothing and hygiene materials.

“We want to build a brick fence at our orphanage to keep our children safe,” said Biazina Orphanage Director, Biazina Cassim.

Cassim said the fundraising will feature various traditional meals on sale, including nsima, rice, chicken, beef, salads, chapatti and fish. He added that, starting in September, the orphanage plans to accommodate children on a permanent basis.

Child rights activist, Memory Chisenga, described the initiative as timely, noting that many children face different forms of abuse daily and need protection.

“Funds must be used for the intended purpose because child care centres need more support and capacity building,” she said.

Biazina Orphanage, established in 2020, suspended its operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed in 2024.
