Chakwera asks Parliament to pass Disaster Management law

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has asked Parliament to pass a legislation which will regulate the management of disasters.

President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has asked Parliament to pass a legislation which will regulate the management of disasters.

President Chakwera said this on Wednesday in Parliament during the presentation of the assessment of Cyclone Freddy disaster.

The Malawii Head of State said apart from regulating the management of future disasters the law will allow government to relocate people from disaster prone areas as one way of protecting them.

He said: “I am also asking you for support of the new legislation my Administration will be bringing to this House to regulate the management of disasters better going forward and relocation of people from disaster prone areas and given more resilience in the face of the future disasters.”

So far at least 500 people have died from Cyclone Freddy which swept most parts of southern region.
