“Everyone has the right to take part in politics and to express themselves freely. No one has the right to stop another person from doing so,” he said.
The Head of State further highlighted that violence during the campaign season is a crime under Malawian law and warned that anyone found infringing upon the rights of others will face legal action.
“We must all safeguard the laws of this country. If anyone violates another person’s rights, they must be reported to the police or relevant authorities,” he said.
President Chakwera also made a firm declaration that no individual, including himself, is above the law, stating clearly that the presidency holds no influence over Malawi Electoral Commission’s operations.
“Let me make it clear, no one is above the law, not even the President. MEC is independent and must be allowed to carry out its mandate without interference,” he added.
President Chakwera then encouraged all registered voters to exercise their constitutional right to vote on September 16, 2025, and wished all political contenders the best as they prepare and present their manifestos to the public.
“As we enter this important period in our democratic journey, let us do so with unity, peace, and respect for each other’s rights,” said the President.
On Monday, The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officially opened the 2025 campaign period ahead of the General Elections scheduled for September 16, 2025.
The campaign season will run for 60 days until September 14, 2025.
