Chakwera says Goodall was ‘selfless politician, true patriot’ who served with utmost humility
President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera has described departed former Minister of Finance, Goodall Gondwe, as a selfless politician who put the welfare of ordinary Malawians before everything else as he discharged his duties.

Chakwera made the sentiments through a speech Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotani-Hara read on his behalf at Gondwe’s residence in Area 10 in Lilongwe where vigil has been taking place.

The State President said he was deeply shocked and touched by the demise of Gondwe, describing him as a selfless and patriotic politician who opted to leave the diaspora to serve Malawi.
“Gondwe was a good advisor to the President starting to the time that he was a Minister of Finance since it was the same time that the president was the leader of opposition. He worked with anybody without taking in consideration of political affiliation,” said Hara.
Chakwera appealed to Malawians to emulate the spirit Gondwe had and endeavor to live it as one way of celebrating his life and work.
Late Goodall Gondwe served in various cabinet positions after working in multiple portfolios as an economist both locally and internationally. He died at the age of 87 on Tuesday after collapsing at his home.
He was pronounced dead upon arrival at Adventist Hospital in the capital city.
He hailed from Kayiwononga Village at Enukweni in Mzimba District where he also once served as a Member of Parliament.
