“In accordance with the electoral laws of Malawi under Section 45 of the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act (2023), where there is only one validly nominated candidate, that candidate is duly declared elected unopposed,” the statement read.
Following this development, MEC will not conduct parliamentary elections for the constituency on September 16 and Chaziya will assume office in line with legal provisions.
However, MEC clarified that Presidential and Local Government Elections will still take place in Lilongwe Chilobwe Constituency on the scheduled polling date, alongside the rest of the country.
