The death of former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima remains a matter of deep national concern that requires urgent and transparent investigation, UTM president Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has said.

Chilima died in a plane crash on 10 June 2024 plane crash in Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba district together with eight other people.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Kabambe stressed that Malawians deserve closure over the tragic loss of Chilima, describing him as a leader whose passing left a lasting void in the nation.

He called for a thorough and independent inquiry to establish the truth and reaffirm Malawi’s commitment to justice and accountability.

“The death of Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima remains a deep national concern that demands urgent and transparent investigation to give Malawians the closure and justice they deserve,” said Kabambe.

Kabambe: We need an independent and a thorough inquiry

Kabambe has also congratulated Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on what he described as the DPP’s electoral victory in the September 16 General Elections.

He emphasized that a peaceful transfer of power will be a testament to the maturity of Malawi’s democracy, urging citizens to remain calm, united, and committed to national development.

“Electoral victories are a mandate for service, not retribution. I call on the new leadership to prioritize inclusive governance, healing divisions, and rebuilding our economy,” Kabambe said.

He further urged political leaders and citizens to work together regardless of differences, stressing that unity is essential for stability and prosperity.

As of 21 September 2025, with 13 district councils’ results confirmed, the DPP President is leading with 501,879 votes with the incumbent Head of State Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) comes second with 210,137
