Civil Aviation Authority certifies Mzuzu Airport

Deputy Minister of Transport and Public Works, Baba Steven Malondera has disclosed that the Civil Aviation Authority has certified Mzuzu Airport and the facility is set to resume flights once some logistical challenges are addressed.

Malondera said this when he inspected the airport on Tuesday.

He said Malawian Airline officials will soon conduct their final checks on the airport before a test flight is done.

“We had a discussion in April and during that discussion we had agreed that in 21 days everything has to be completed but due to other logistical challenges, we have moved to this date.

“All I can say is that we are almost done because arrivals and departure sections of the airport have been innovated and safety issues have been taken on board. The major challenge was certification however the Civil Aviation Authority has certified the airport and we are good to go,” he said.

He said with the reopening of Kayelekera uranium mine, Mzuzu Airport as well as Karonga Airport will be strategic.

“We are not saying that the airport is up to standard however we will keep improving. We need to generate revenue but without compromising the safety of passengers,” he said.

Spokesperson for Malawi Airlines Joseph Chikalipo said resumption of flights to Mzuzu will be a significant step towards improving connectivity and boosting economic activities in the Northern Region.
