The Christian Youth Association of Malawi (CYAMA) has called on all political parties in the country to desist from exploiting young people in acts of political violence as the country approaches the 2025 general elections.
The appeal follows violent clashes during a peaceful demonstration organized by the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) in Lilongwe on November 25, 2024, with reportedly a group of unidentified individuals armed with machetes.
In a press statement, CYAMA National Coordinator Christopher Chimangeni condemned the incident, describing it as a serious threat to Malawi’s democracy and peace.
“Youth are the future of our nation, and it is our collective responsibility to protect and empower them. Using young people in political violence undermines the principles of democracy, tolerance, and respect for human rights,” said Chimangeni.
Chimangeni also urged young people to reject being manipulated or coerced into political violence.
Instead, he encouraged them to focus on advocating for policies and programs that advance their interests and contribute positively to society.
“Young people’s energy, creativity, and zeal are valuable assets to Malawi. We encourage the youth to channel these qualities into voter education, peaceful dialogue, and supporting issue-based campaigns. Let us ensure the 2025 elections are free, fair, and credible,” said Chimangeni.
CYAMA also appealed to the government to strengthen measures to prevent political violence and hold perpetrators accountable.
Chimangeni emphasized the importance of collaboration between government institutions and security agencies, stating, “Concrete steps must be taken to protect all citizens, especially the youth, from being exploited for violent purposes.”
There have been rising concerns about politically motivated violence in the country as days prior to the Lilongwe incident, Minister of Information Moses Kumkuyu narrowly escaped harm when a group of youths pelted stones at his convoy in Ndirande, Blantyre, and people armed with machetes clashed with peaceful demonstrations in Lilongwe which were organized by opposition pollical parties last week.
