Institutions affected by cyclone Freddy are set to benefit from a K1.6 billion donation from a Korean non-governmental relief organisation known as Global Life Sharing operating in Malawi.

This follows a handover ceremony that took place at Ministry of Health Office on Wednesday, 29th November in Lilongwe.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer, Jung-nam Kim, the Country Representative for Global Life Sharing in Malawi, YungDuk-Clara Cho said the donation is  necessary as it aligns well with the organisation’s goal for under developed countries.

“Global Life Sharing aims to increase life expectancy by improving the medical infrastructure  and providing medical supplies  in under developed countries as well as develop future capabilities by providing educational infrastructure, equipment and school supplies,

Hence we have donated medical equipment, educational materials, daily supplies and many more at a tune of $922,000 which is an equivalent of MK 1,560 million, which will benefit the health sector, education sector among other government sectors,” said YungDuk.

In his remarks, the Principal Secretary for Administration at Ministry of Health, Beston Chisamile highlighted that Malawi has faced challenges for the past years such as COVID 19, Cholera and cyclone Freddy which left the health sector heavily burdened.

Global Life sharing hands over Donation

“As you know we got hit by cyclone Freddy which came with a flooding disaster that claimed lives, health infrastructures and rendered a number of health facilities inaccessible. Government has since then, been working so hard to mobilise resources in various forms, to support those affected with the catastrophes, including the health sector.

However, due to the magnitude of the problem, Malawi alone cannot manage to provide all the resources and interventions to alleviate the problems and called on development partners for support,” said Chisamile.

He further stated that the donation has come at a time when the southern region of Malawi which was the most affected still needs a lot of different medicines and medical supplies in addition to other needs.

“Let me take this opportunity to thank Global Life Sharing Corporation for providing this donation which will go a long way towards alleviating the challenges which the victims of Cyclone Freddy are facing,

I assure Malawians that the donation will be used for the intended purpose and that the government shall not tolerate any abuse of these donations,” he said.

Director of Preparedness and Response at DoDMA Moses Chimphepo commended Global Life Sharing for the donation saying it will go along way as most government institutions lost a lot of equipment due to natural disasters.

Out of the MK1.6 billion donations, MK1.3billion worth donation has been distributed to the Ministry of Health, and the rest has been dispersed to DaeYang Luke hospital, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Sharing our World Foundation.
