The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) has urged Malawians to remain alert as continued heavy rainfall increases the risk of flooding during the New Year period.
DCCMS Director Lucy Mtilatila said the country is experiencing persistent rains, particularly in central and northern regions, heightening the likelihood of flash floods and river overflows.
Speaking to Nthanda Times, Mtilatila advised residents, especially those living in flood-prone areas, to closely monitor their surroundings and stay informed about weather conditions upstream.
“The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings and understand what is happening upland, especially if you live along rivers that usually flood,” Mtilatila said.

She also warned that continuous torrential rains could weaken housing structures, urging households to regularly inspect their homes for signs of damage.
According to Mtilatila, reports of flooding rivers have already been received, prompting the need for early action by communities at risk.
She has since urged people living near rivers and in disaster-prone areas to consider temporarily relocating to safer places when water levels rise, returning only after floodwaters have subsided.
Mtilatila said vigilance and early movement could help prevent loss of life and property as the rainy season continues.
