Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) has advised lake users to take necessary precautionary measures due to the stirring up of Mwera winds over Lake Malawi and other water bodies.
The winds are expected to blow with a maximum speed of 50 km/hour with strength, producing higher and potentially dangerous waves on water bodies over the coming days.

According to a statement issued and signed by DCCMS Director on Monday, Dr. Lucy Mtilatila, the dangerous lake conditions are likely to spread to other areas including Karonga, posing serious risks to fishermen, boat operators and lakeshore communities.
“When strong winds occur, fishermen and all other lake users should take extra precautions, during foggy conditions, drivers should exercise caution due to reduced visibility and people should stay warm and avoid using charcoal burner in poorly ventilated houses during this winter season,” said Mtilatila.

Mtilatila said from July 28 up to August 3, 2025, the general public should expect better part of Chiperoni weather characterized by windy, cloudy and chilly conditions associated with patches of fog and rain drizzles.
Chairperson for Mangochi Sub Fisheries Association, Amidu Kalulu commended DCCMS for issuing a timely weather forecast, saying it will help to reduce the number of accidents involving fishermen.
“Fishing hooks and rods can be hazardous if not handled properly. Therefore, as fishermen, we must take heed of the message from the department to mitigate risks associated with climate change.
“We will sensitize our fellow farmers on the importance of being prepared and observing precautionary measures,” said Kalulu.
During the past week, most areas experienced partly cloudy and cool conditions with Karonga Meteorological Station maintaining a record of the lowest minimum temperature.
On July 22. 2025, the nomal temperature recorded was -6.5 degree celcius while other districts which were cooler than normal were Machinga, Zomba, Chiradzulu, Thyolo, Mulanje and Phalombe.
