Misunderstandings within the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) have taken a new turn, with the party formally demanding its former Secretary General, Grelzeder Jeffrey, to provide a declaration of funding and cash donations she received from individuals and organizations on behalf of the Party.

In a letter addressed to Jeffrey and released by Nthanda Times, Charles Mhango, the National Director of Legal Affairs, underscored Jeffrey’s announcement during her press briefing in Lilongwe on December 1, 2023, where she disclosed that the party had received donations for the upcoming National Governing Council (NGC).

“In your previous capacity as Secretary General, where you announced and informed the nation that you have received funding and cash donations from various individuals and organizations for the Party to hold the Meeting of the National Governing Council and the National Political Conference,” reads part of the letter.

The letter referred to Section 27(2), (5), and (6) of the Political Parties Act, 2018, stating that the Secretary General is required to declare to the Registrar of political parties the cash donations made to the party.

“I have been informed by the Secretariat that you have not handed over any such funds or donations to the Treasurer General nor remitting any such funds or cash donations which you have received on behalf of the Party into the Party Bank Accounts.

“I wish to bring to your attention and hereby advise you that under Section 27 (2)’, (5) and (6) of the Political Parties Act, 2018, you are required to declare to the Registrar of Political Parties, the cash donations made to the Party,” reads part of the letter.

However, the National Director of Legal Affairs warned Jeff wa Jeffrey that she will be personally held liable if she fails to hand over the funds and cash donations.

Jeffrey is yet to respond on the matter.

There has been misunderstandings in the former ruling party on the party’s leadership.

Recently, the party’s president announced through a statement that Jeffrey is no longer the party’s Secretary General and has been given a role of the party’s Central Region Vice President, a position which Jeffrey has turned down.
