Continuous Heavy rains have caused flash floods and damaged roads and property in Nkhotakota district, leaving some families homeless.

Nkhotakota District Disaster Risk Management Officer, Romatchinga Nkhata, has confirmed on Tuesday about the development saying search and rescue operations started on Monday in Dwangwa and Kakuyu areas and that so far over 95 people who were stranded had been rescued and currently camping at Kachele.

“The search operation is still going on as rains continue and more places are being affected,” said Nkhata.

District Commissioner for Nkhotakota Ben Matengeni Tonho said they are in touch with the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs (DoDMA) on the matter, and he urged people to stay vigilant.

Meanwhile, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has urged the public to remain cautious as the country continues receiving heavy rainfall in most parts.
