Gateway Mall theft suspect arrested, part of cash recovered in Lilongwe

This was disclosed by Lilongwe Police Public Relations Officer, Hastings Chigalu.

Chigalu said One suspect, identified as Fradrick Nyamula, 39, has since been arrested.

“On January 4, 2023, a certain individual withdrew money from the bank at Gateway Mall amounting to 6.5 million kwacha.

“The suspect, Fradrick, and his accomplice Khonya Makina, who were on a Honda Fit vehicle, followed the person who was driving a red X-trail vehicle after spotting him in the bank to have withdrawn a large amount of money,” said Chigalu.

Chigalu further said They systematically followed him up to City Mall where Fradrick was dropped to accomplish the mission while Makina drove close to Mbowe Filling Station waiting for his colleague.

“After successfully stealing the bag containing the cash, the suspects went to Mchesi where a certain amount was left to Fradrick’s cousin, before proceeding to Blantyre.

“Fradrick instructed his cousin to distribute the money to different individuals and mobile money accounts and then throw the red bag in a toilet,” said Chigalu

However, after intensive investigations and follow-ups, the station detectives managed to trace and recover part of the stolen money.

Fradrick was arrested after a successful operation by detective law enforcers.

Meanwhile, police have intensified efforts to arrest Khonya Makina.

Fradrick Nyamula, who is nicknamed Angozo among his peers, hails from Chimbulu Village, Traditional Authority Machinjiri in Blantyre.

He will appear in court soon to answer theft charges.
