Hasheem Banda, the UTM parliamentary hopeful for Zomba City North, has placed youth empowerment and infrastructure development at the heart of his campaign as the country heads toward the September 16 elections.
Following the official submission of his nomination papers on Tuesday to the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), Banda addressed the media, outlining his vision to transform Zomba into a well-planned and economically vibrant city.

Central to his agenda is the empowerment of young people through vocational training and entrepreneurship support.
“Young people are the backbone of our economy, and I want to ensure they are equipped with the right skills to be self-reliant,” said Banda.
He pledged to open vocational training centers and promote business education among youth as a way of tackling unemployment in the city.
Beyond youth empowerment, Banda committed to implementing tangible development projects such as road construction and the building of new school blocks.
He emphasized his desire to beautify and modernize Zomba, positioning it as a model city for planning and sustainability.
Banda also called for peace during the campaign period and discouraged the use of abusive language, particularly toward elders.
“We can win votes through our vision and discipline, not insults,” he said.
He expressing confidence in the UTM party’s leadership, by urged Zomba City North residents to support both his candidacy and that of UTM President Dr. Dalitso Kabambe in the upcoming tripartite elections.
The MEC has set September 16 as the official date for the national polls.
