CSO leaders, journalists hone skills in gender mainstreaming

Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has trained Civil Society Organizations and media practitioners based in Karonga on gender mainstreaming and Gender Based Violence (GBV) in humanitarian response.

Speaking after a two day training, EAM Timazge Nkhaza project coordinator, Dumisani Nungu, said EAM wants to see Organizations and media houses realize gender equality in their projects and day to day activities.

“As EAM, we believe that every project that is being implemented has to incorporate all gender issues and we want all organizations to have policies that will ensure that everyone will be given equal opportunities to work in that organization,” Nungu said.

He has since pointed out that they expect the media and CSOs will be able to develop policies required to safeguard people that are working in their organizations or media institutions from any forms of GBV or discrimination.

Karonga District Gender and Development Officer, Ireen Mwenelupembe, expressed satisfaction with the training saying gender awareness issues will get better.

“We are very impressed with this training as issues of gender awareness will improve because previously there was low awareness in terms of gender issues, so if all CSOs have gained something, there will be more awareness and a larger population will be reached,” she said.

Vice chairperson for Karonga CSOs, Edgar Phiri, said this training will help organizations integrate gender issues into all the programs that organizations are implementing so as to protect the vulnerable groups.
