ICC completes 73 cases of complaints against police officers

The Independent Complaints Commission (ICC) says it has completed handling 73 out of 420 public complaints against police officers received since 2021.

ICC Public Relations Officer, Happy Njalam’mano, says out of the total cases, 268 are under investigation, while 23 were submitted for legal opinion.

Njalam’mano added that 13 cases are currently in court and 14 were recommended for disciplinary sanctions.

He further stated that 3 cases have resulted in convictions, adding that from January this year alone, the commission has received 52 new complaints.

According to him, the high number of cases the commission is receiving indicates that people are beginning to understand the importance of reporting complaints to the commission.

“It is now encouraging that people are able to understand the need to report their complaints against police officers because the aim of the commission is to receive such cases and promote professionalism among police officers,” said Njalam’mano.

He, however, said the commission is working around the clock to complete all the cases received.

The ICC was established under Section 128 of Malawi’s Police Act to receive and investigate public complaints against police officers with a view to promoting professionalism in policing functions.
