Kabambe sounds SOS for Cyclone Freddy victims in Phalombe

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential aspirant Dr. Dalitso Kabambe has encouraged those involved in humanitarian efforts for Cyclone Freddy victims from both the public and private sectors to reach out to the hard to reach areas where the damage caused by the cyclone is enormous.

Kabambe, who is also former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), was speaking on Thursday at Thom Trading Centre, in Chiringa, Phalombe district, where people in the area of Traditional Authority ( TA) Nazombe have been displaced following the cyclone which has affected most parts of the Southern Region.

He has since raised over K18 million to help those who have been affected by Cyclone Freddy in many parts of the Southern Region of the country.

Kabambe said he is touched by the catastrophic and overwhelming impact of the cyclone in Phalombe district.

“There is need for government and other agencies to pay attention to people in the rural areas where support is becoming difficult to reach due to the roads that are impassable,” he said.

Member of Parliament for Phalombe East, Robert Mwina, commended Kabambe’s efforts in assisting affected areas in her constituency.

Mwina went on to make a call to all stakeholders that are coordinating the relief efforts to assist people of his area where about twelve bridges have been destroyed .

Phalombe district has recorded 50 deaths of Tropical Cyclone Freddy while a hundred other people are missing.

About 20 thousand people have been displaced but no camp has been set up to accommodate the victims.
